Kerala: Palakkad temple says no to trans couple’s marriage | Kochi News

PALAKKAD: On their wedding day, a transgender couple received the rudest shock of all after the temple where they planned to tie the knot refused to solemnize their marriage.
Neelankrishna and Adwaika were to get married at Kachamkurissi temple in Kollengode on Thursday and had printed the wedding invitation showing the temple, dedicated to Mahavishnu, as the venue of the ceremony, but had to change the venue of the function to a nearby hall.
Mohanan, an official with the temple that comes under Malabar Devaswom Board, said since there was simply no precedence, the temple authorities decided not to allow the couple to tie the ‘thali’ at the temple.
Subsequently, the marriage was held at the Shenkunthar Kalyana Mandapam nearby.”Since we have nobody to support us, the temple authorities must have denied permission to us to get married at the temple. It is not because of our fault we were born as transgenders,” said Neelankrishna.
Neelankrishna and Adwaika are employed in a private enterprise at Kollengode. One of their colleagues Vyshak said nearly 150 persons, including the Adwaika’s parents, had reached the temple for the marriage ceremony. Neelankrishna is from Alappuzha and Adwaika is from Thiruvananthapuram.
